William Calder was born in Jamaica.

William was born in 1855.[1] He passed away in Scotland on 2 January 1932.[2] [3] However he has a will that was filed in Cape Province, South Africa on February 29, 1932.[4]

William married Emily Sinclair 15 August 1888 in Jamaica.[5]

"William Johnson Calder (fl. 1875-1932), MD, practitioner in Jamaica and South Africa. Class ticket, certificates of attendance and testimonials concerning Calder's medical education at Glasgow and Edinburgh, signed mainly by Lister and Allen Thomson, 1875-78; letters from Lister to Calder, 1886-99; miscellaneous Calder papers, 1899-1927." [6]

"So excited to be viewing the letters in the Rare Collections at the Wellcome Library from the late 1800s that Lord Joseph Lister wrote to our great grandfather Dr. William Johnson Calder. Dr. Lister the" father of antiseptic surgery" and surgeon to Queen Victoria was Calder's professor, mentor and dear friend. The letters offer a glimpse into Calder's life from the University of Edinburgh, to Jamaica, to South Africa. Archibald Lister Calder was named after Dr. Lister."[7]

"WILLIAM JOHNSON CALDER, born at Stanmore, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, June 18, 1855, M.D., CM. Edinburgh, m. at St. Thomas' Church, Westmoreland, Jamaica, Aug. 15, 1888, to Mary Isabelle, dau. of Daniel and Helen Sinclair, of Westmoreland, Jamaica, and sister of Frederick Archibald Sinclair, M.B., CM. Edinburgh. He went to South Africa, and was a surgeon in the Army in the Boer War[9], and joined the R.A.M.C of the South African Army in the Great War, and on demobilization practised in Scotland in 1920. Issue of the marriage : 156 William Eardley, 157 Kelvin Sinclair, 158 John Comyn, 159 Gertrude Margaret, 160 Edith Emily, 161 Adeline Victoria, 162 Archibald Lister, 163 Donald Alister Luard."[10]
