Ruth Cain was born November 5, 1784 in South Carolina. She died July 19, 1834 in Wayne County, Indiana and is buried in Williamsburg Cemetery (tombstone photo to the right). Her parents were Abner Cain 1762-1816 and Sarah Townsend Cain 1764-1833. She married William Thompson, born in Ireland, around 1800 in Union County, South Carolina. William died before 1830.
Ruth and William had 10 children (listed under William Thompson biography).
In the 1830 census she was living next to Sarah Cain, likely her mother, who had moved from Warren County, Ohio following her husband’s death.
There were indications that Ruth Cain Thompson, wife of William Thompson, was the daughter of Abner Cain. There was no unequivocal proof until an 1824 deed was found in Warren County, Ohio. The heirs of Abner Cain who had died in 1816 were stated in the deed, including the following statement about Ruth.
“This Indenture made on this 11th day of March in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty four Between Sarah Cain widow of Abner Cain, William Thompson & Ruth Thompson his wife . . . the said Ruth, . . . being daughters and heirs of said Abner Cain deceased and with their husbands of all of lawful age . . . “
The deed was executed by Ruth in Wayne County, Indiana where she lived. (Deed Records of Warren County, Ohio Deed Book 11 page 252.)
