Biography

Catherine Caesar was born about 1823 in Madison County, New York. (See Research Note)

Catherine is found in the 1855 New York State Census, living in the town of Smithville, Madison County, NY, with her husband, Jacob Riley, and their two children. They had lived in Smithville for the past four years.

In 1860, per the United States Census for that year, Catherine and Jacob were still living in Madison County, but in the town of Stockbridge, NY, and they had five children at this point. Catherine was working as a servant.

Still living in the town of Stockbridge, NY, Catherine and her children are found on the 1865 US Census, but Jacob was no longer there. (See Research Note)

Catherine married Tobias Fuller around 1868. On the 1870 US Census, Catherine was living in Homer, Cortland County, NY. She and her new husband and three of her children were residing in the home of two elderly women.

By June 1880, Catherine and Tobias had moved to the town of Cortlandville, NY, still in Cortland County. Tobias was working as a farmer. Catherine’s three youngest children were living with them.

At some point between June 1880 and June 1990, the Fullers relocated to the adjacent county of Tompkins. According to the 1900 US Census, Catherine and Tobias, married 32 years, were living at 110 Wheat Street in the city of Ithaca, NY. The record indicates that only four of Catherine’s five children are still living.

Catherine died on 17 January 1902 in Ithaca, NY.

Research Notes

  • Catherine’s birth year and place of birth are implied by census records. Further research is needed to confirm.
  • Could Catherine’s first husband, Jacob Riley, have died in the Civil War?
