Bertie Cadbury KB DSC DFC is Notable.

Sir Egbert "Bertie" Cadbury KB DSC DFC was born on 20th April 1893 at Selly Oak, Worcestershire, England. He was the third son of George Cadbury and Elizabeth Taylor.[1]

Following a two-month engagement, Bertie married Mary Forbes Phillips, the daughter of the Reverend A Forbes Phillips, vicar of Gorleston-on-Sea, on 12th February 1917.[2] The wedding ceremony was held at Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk, conducted by Mary's father.

a Quaker in the war

Despite being a Quaker, and thereby pacifist, Bertie interrupted his studies in economics at Trinity College, Cambridge, to become a fighter pilot in the Royal Naval Air Service during the First World War. Cadbury was posted to the Naval Air Station at South Denes, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He shot down two Zeppelins (L.21 and L.70) over the North Sea, being awarded both the Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Flying Cross. He detested the carnage of war and took no delight in condemning the crew of the airships to their deaths; expressing "the murder of war" as early as September 1915. On 1st April 1918, the Royal Naval Air Service was merged with the Army's Royal Flying Corps to form the Royal Air Force, and the same day, Cadbury was appointed a squadron commander with the rank of Major.

business and charitable work

After the war, he returned to the family business, joining J S Fry & Sons, with which Cadbury's had merged in 1918, and soon becoming managing director. He served as a justice of the peace and was chairman of the Bristol Federation of Boys' Clubs for 20 years. In 1944, he was appointed a Director of Lloyds Bank. On 30th June 1950, he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Gloucester. Cadbury was awarded a knighthood in the 1957 New Year Honours for his "public services in Somerset and Gloucestershire", receiving his accolade from the Queen at Buckingham Palace on 12th February.

Sir Egbert retired as vice–chairman of Cadburys in 1962.. He died of cancer on 12th January 1967 at his home in Weston-super-mare, Somerset.[3]
