Biography

Dr Henri Bélanger (1872-1952) Enfant de la paroisse

Henri Bélanger est né à Pain Court, Kent le 16 Octobre 1872. Il était le fils de Leandre Bélanger et Geneviève Houle.

De 1885-1888, il fit ses études à l'Université d'Ottawa et l'année suivante au Collège l'Assomption de Sandwich. En septembre 1891 il entrait au Detroit College of Medecine, et gradua en 1894.

Il épousa Claire (Clara) Reaume à Pain Court, le 2 Octobre 1894, et ensuite prit la route de River Rouge, Ecorse, Michigan et s'établit un bureau de médecin ou il développa la spécialité d'accoucheur. Il recu une grande reconnaissance pour son travail, et fut même nommé au Detroit Medical Hall of Fame par la Wayne Medical Society en 1933, parce qu'il avait aidé à accoucher plus de 4500 bébés durant sa carrière de médecin, parce qu'il n'avait jamais refusé de répondre à un appel, et parce qu'il incarnait toutes les qualificatifs du parfait médecin de famille. Après avoir recu sa nomination, il est estimé qu'il rajouta un autre 1000 bébés à son actif. Il est bon à noter que la plupart des naissances dont il est question furent dans les maisons de ses patientes.

En 1896 il obtint son certificat de naturalisation de citoyen américain. Il contribua grandement et efficacement à faire incorporer la ville de River Rouge en 1998. De 1900-1920 environ il occupa le position d'affaires de santé (Health officer) à River Rouge. En 1925 il fut choisi comme l'un des Directeurs de la River rouge Saving Bank. Il était membre de la Wayne County Medical Society, de la Michigan State Medical Society, de la American Medical Association et finalement chirurgien de New York Lines Surgeons. Pendant plus de 20 ans il a siègé comme membre du conseil d'éducation, et en fut même élu président à plus de sept reprises.

  5. Rosalie Ernestine (1907-1998) épousa Rayfield Simon (Ray) Anderzak
  6. Dr Ernest Emmanuel (1910-1973) épousa Lillian Margaret Jeannette

Clara est décédée en 1938, et Henri épousa en secondes noces Rose Anne Paré, veuve d'Antoine Canuelle.

Il est décédé le 31 Oct 1952 à River Rouge, Michigan, et fut enterré à Holy Cross Cemetery à Detroit.

Le parc municipal 'Dr Henry Belanger Park' à River Rouge fut nommé en son honneur.


Henri was born in Pain Court, Kent, Ontario in 1872. He was the son of Léandre Bélanger and Geneviève Houle.

He attended Ottawa University, Ontario, from 1885 to 1888, and the next year at Assumption college, in Sandwich, Windsor, Essex. In 1891 he entered Detroit College of Medicine, graduating in 1894.

He married Claire Reaume in Pain Court, Kent, Ontario on 2 Oct 1894.

He went to River Rouge, Michigan the autumn following his graduation, and remained there, becoming a general practioner and developing the specialty of delivering babies. He received wide recognitiion for his work, and was even nominated to the Detroit Medical Hall of Fame by the Wayne Medical Society back in 1933, because he had brought over 4500 babies into the world, because he had had never refused to respond to a call and had all of the qualifications of the ideal family doctor. After receiving his nomination, it is estimated he added over 1000 more babies to that list. Most of the large number of births at which he officiated were in the homes of his patients.

He passed away in 1952, and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Detroit, Michigan.

Dr Henry Belanger Park in River Rouge Michigan was named in his honor.
