Surgeon RN
Dr Benjamin Bynoe who served aboard the HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin. He was the Assistant Ship's Surgeon. Born 1803 -1865 and married to a Charlotte Ollard 1809 -1887 (Online sources list his death as 1865, 1843 being the end of the voyage on the beagle)
"Naval surgeon. On HMS Beagle 1825-43 incl. voyage under FitzRoy with Charles Darwin 1831-36, with Wickham & Stokes 1837-43.
On NW coast from Roebuck Bay to Port George Fourth, early 1838; Bass Str. islands, Port Phillip and Tas., July 1838 - May 1839, then to Sydney; on Qld coast June-July, then to Port Essington (late Aug.), then Arnhem Land, to Swan R. (Arrived 31 Jan. 1840, departed 4 Apr.); NW coast to Timor & return to Swan R. (27 Sept. - 25 Oct.); King George Sound (2-15 Nov.), Holdfast Bay (29 Nov.); Sydney, Arrived 23 Dec. 1840.
Further survey of Qld coast & Gulf of Carpentaria June-Sept. 1841; visited Timor and again sailed down W coast to Swan R. (arr. 23 Nov. 1841); visited Champion Bay 14-17 Dec. including excursion to Wizard Peak 15-16 Dec, then to Koombana Bay (27-29 Dec. 1841), King George Sound (Jan. 1842), Adelaide (26 Jan.-7 Feb. 1842), Portland Bay (Feb.), Hobart (26 Feb.) and Sydney (Arrived 15 Mar.). Collected many plants, esp. on Depuch Is., Abrolhos Is., WA, Victoria R., NT, Bass Strait. Also in NSW, e.g. Mt Tomah.
From 1843 to 1846 on HMS Fly. Also on Aboukir transporting convicts to Tasmania, 1851-52. Returned Jan. 1863. "
