Biography

Stella (Butler) Norris is a part of US Black heritage.

Stella (Butler) Norris was born in Mississippi.

Stella Rosa Butler was born on 10 November 1870 or 1872 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Her mother was M Butler.^[1] Her father was Samuel Levy.^[2]

She married Isham Franklin Norris on 24 November 1886 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.^[3] Her relative Ida B Wells was her maid of honor at the wedding.^[4]

Isham operated a grocery store at 141 Beale Street. In March 1892, their family was in danger after the People's Grocery Lynchings in Memphis.^[5] The Norris family quickly relocated to Guthrie, Oklahoma, where they opened a grocery store and engaged in local politics.^[6]

In 1893, they began homesteading 160 acres of land in Perry County, Oklahoma. ^[7]

In the 1900 census, Stella was living in Payne County, Oklahoma, with her husband and four sons.^[8] The family moved to Seattle, King County, Washington, in 1902.^[1]

In the 1910 census, she was living in Seattle with her husband, five sons, and a niece from Tennessee.^[9]

In the 1920 census, she was living in Seattle with her husband and three sons.^[10]

Her husband passed away on 23 September 1928.^[11]

In the 1930 census, she was listed as living with her sons Carl and Wendell in Seattle.^[12] In the same census, she was also listed as living with her son Percy and his wife in Seattle.^[13]

In the 1940 census, she was living in Seattle with her son Wendell and his family.^[14]

Stella Rosa (Butler) Norris passed away on 1946.^[2][1]
