Ethel Roina Butler was born on 24 January 1912 at Clover Creek, near Bliss, Gooding, Idaho, United States, daughter of Lester Leroy Butler (1884–1963) and Ada Lee Little (1882–1942).^[1] She was the second of six children, having an older half-sister.^[2]

Ethel began first grade in a one-room school house in Pine, Elmore, Idaho. Her father had a farm there.^[2][3]

She attended Gooding High School, in Gooding, Idaho, graduating in 1931.^[4][5]

She had completed three years at Gooding College when she met and fell in love with Herbert Coleman.^[2]

On 20 May 1933, Ethel and Herbert Frank Coleman eloped to Mountain Home, Elmore, Idaho.^[6] They began their married life working on his parent's ranch, wrangling cattle, living in a covered wagon, and cooking over an open fire. At one point, the two of them moved 250 cattle from the Magic Reservoir area, across the lava flows, and down to the Snake River for the winter. A distance of over 50 miles.^[2]

By 1940, they had a ranch and dairy of their own in Lincoln County, Idaho. ^[7]

They were hand-milking cows until Herb was injured and they had to buy a milking machine to keep up with production. After he had recovered, Ethel went to work for the telephone company in about 1948. She started as a switchboard operator, then night operator, and eventually supervisor for the Bell Telephone Company in Twin Falls. She retired from the company in about 1975.^[2][8]

Herb died in 1986, and Ethel moved to Glenns Ferry, in Elmore County, in 1989. She was an active member of the Blue Bird Society, and maintained nest boxes in the area. She was an accomplished hunter, fisherwoman, and rock hound. She enjoyed painting, gardening, and crochet.^[2]

Ethel died on 5 March 2005 in Glenns Ferry, Elmore, aged 93. She was buried in Hagerman Cemetery, Hagerman, Gooding County, Idaho.^[9]
