Biography

North Carolina Flag
Tlitha (Butler) Clark was born in North Carolina.

Tlitha Butler was born in 1866 in North Carolina and died on October 21, 1918 in Clarktown, Carter County, Tennessee. She was the wife of Jasper Clark and the daughter of John Butler and Mary Jane Morgan. [1]

Tlitha (Butler) Clark was a Tennessean.

Tlitha Butler, her husband Jasper Clark, and their family are mentioned in the book "Jeremiah and Alexander Clark of North Carolina" published in 1997. The story follows with the author's (Robert Bradley Clark) permission.

"Jasper Clark was born near Valle Crucis September 11, 1866. His parents were James Wilburn Clark and Suzanne Lusk. His family knew him by the name Jasper but it appears in old census records that he was called Wesley when he was a little boy. Jasper died December 11, 1937, in Carter County Tennessee. He married Litha Butler. She was born in 1866 and died of the flu in 1918. She was buried in the Clarktown cemetery. Around 1918, a terrible influenza epidemic swept through the area and caused many to die. Daughter Hattie died in 1918 and was also buried in the Clarktown cemetery.
Jasper worked as a logger in the Clarktown area. He also made a side income by picking and selling wild herbs which were used for medical purposes. Jasper and his son Wes lived in an old, primitive house up in the mountains near Clarktown. The house was constructed of rough-cut sawmill boards and had a large stone fireplace and a dirt floor. When brother Newton’s grandchildren would go up into the mountains to pick strawberries they would stop by to visit Uncle Jasper in his secluded home.
Jasper was noted for making some powerful moonshine. One time he was arrested and brought to trial in Elizabethton. Before the trial Jasper baked a pan of cornbread and fried up a mess of pork fat-back. He then packed this as a lunch and brought it with him to the courthouse. At about noon the court proceedings were dragging on and hunger was setting in so Jasper opened up his sack and laid out his food on a table in the courtroom. Being a well mannered fellow, he then asked the judge to join him as it was now dinner time. Jasper was polite but obviously not familiar with courtroom procedures. The judge recessed the court and talked to the prosecutor. He said something like “Get that man out of this court... he’s crazy!”
Children of Jasper and Letha Clark were Andrew, Hattie, Lizzie, Stella, Mary Ann, Wes, Pearl, Roby and Lida Clark. Andrew was married twice and his wives were Delia Butler and Martha Berry. Hattie’s husband was John Roberts. Lizzie was married to Arthur Roberts. Stella married Moss Pate. Mary Ann died young. Wes and Lida never married. Pearl was married to Adam Wheeler and Ed Campbell. Roby was married three times. His wives were Pearl Sheyd, Lula Anderson and Etta Barnett." [2]
