Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Mary Buster is a part of US Black heritage.

Mary A. Buster was born about 1847 in New York. She was raised and educated in the Colored Orphans Asylum in New York, New York. She was likely the sibling of Julia Buster at the same orphanage.

In 1850, she is attending school at the orphanage. Two of the orphanage's six on-site teachers that year were women of color: 47-year-old Jane Stout and 20-year-old Mary A. Boder. The orphanage's matron was 40-year-old Susan Benedict who may have been a white Quaker.
