Richard Burt was probably born in England, but even his estimated date of birth is not without conflict. His name does not appear on the list of Taunton men subject to military duty in 1643,[1] so either (a) he was not then at Taunton, as reasoned by Robert Wakefield (2000),[2] or (b) he was then over the age of 60, thus not obliged to serve, argued by Samuel Hopkins Emery (1893).[3]
Robert Wakefield (2000) wrote, "James and his brother Richard Burt must have settled in Taunton shortly after 1643, as they are not on the 1643 list of men able to bear arms for Taunton."[4]
Richard Burt's name appears among the "ancient purchasers" of Taunton (1638).[5] Henry M. Burt (1893) claimed he must have settled there by that date,[6] but no evidence has been shown to confirm his residency. Apparently he purchased eight shares in the company.[6] The land was purchased from Massasoit of the Wampanoags.[7] It was originally called "Cohannet and received the name change on March 3, 1639-40.[6]
Richard Burt died sometime before 26 October 1647[6] for that was when his under-aged son, Richard, chose his uncle, James Burt, as his guardian. The choice of guardian was confirmed by the court.[8][9] Henry M. Burt in his book "Early Days in New England..." cites Plymouth Court Records, 26 October 1647: "The Court ordereth, upon pet'con of Richard Burt the sonne of Richard Burt deceased, late of Taunton, that ye said Richard Burt shall mak choyse of his owne guardian; & whereas he makes choyse of his vuncle James Burt to be guardian vnto him & to liue wth him during his minority, the Court app'ues of his choyse & confermes the same."[6]
Maj. William Bradford, son of William Bradford, Esq on 9 July 1689 "gave a quitclaim deed to the Inhabitants of Taunton ... He mentions by name in the body of the deed 70 "old proprietors" etc. of which is named in the list on page 328, "James Burt, the Asignes of Richard Burt Deceased." In addition, James Burt's name is listed separately and seems to be included as those from the North purchase, which (if interpretation is accurate) would mean that James arrived later and purchased land later than his brother, Richard.[10]

Not known at New England during Puritan Great Migration. There is no indication that this couple immigranted to New England during the Puritan Great Migtation. Richard Burt is not listed in The Great Migration Directory. Burt and Burt (1893) Early Days in New England... indicated "we can be reasonably sure" he was in Cohannet in 1639-1640, when the name was changed to Taunton (page 512). This is not a statement of fact and is not supported by historical evidence.[6]

At Taunton. Evidently contrary to Colket, according to Wakefield in "James Burt of Taunton, Massachusetts" "James and his brother Richard Burt must have settled in Taunton shortly after 1643, as they are not on the 1643 list of men able to bear arms for Taunton."[12]
Taunton Quitclaim, 1689. On 9 July 1689, Maj. William Bradford executed a quitclaim deed to the inhabitants of Taunton. FindAGrave Findagrave.com indicates he died 26 Oct 1641 in "Saint John, Barbados in a non-Cemetery Burial, Specifically: On the East, or Atlantic side, of Barbados situated on a cliff overlooking the Bathsheba Coast near where the Saint Johns Parish Church Cemetery is located."[13] This is incorrect. The record used to estimate his date of death is dated 26 Oct 1647, when his son applied for a legal guardian.

P.S. Several WikiTree English Project team members have noted the obvious error in the current location data field--Dorchester is in Dorset, not Devon.
1. Standardize the narrative sections to conform better with PGM guidance.
2. Update his birth data to report he was born about 1594 (assumes he was age 35 when his son was born), probably in England. (In 2015, Robert Charles Anderson reported Richard's brother's origins were unknown; in 2000 Robert Wakefield reported the brother was probably born in England).
3. Update his death location to Taunton, Plymouth Colony-uncertain. (He is "late of Taunton" in the court record concerning his son's guardianship.)
4., Will move the information about his possible Barbados residency to research notes. (The man of Barbados and the man of Taunton have not been proven to be the same person. More research has been done about the man seen in the Barbados records.) See Help with Burt records from Barbados, Church Records, 1637-1849, 2022 G2G.
5. Change his wife's given name to unknown. No historical records have been located that identify Richard's wife by name. (The name "Jane" is believe to be a rendering Jane Adams--a woman who married a man named Richard Burt at London in 1624.) See Seek assistance regarding Jane, WikiTree's wife of Richard^1 Burt, 2022 G2G.
If anyone feels the proposed changes overlook particular historical evidence, please post so that we may collaborate further.--Gene

Date of Birth. Profile sports an estimated date of birth as before 1583. This presumes he was over aged 60 and therefore his name did not appear on the 1643 list of Taunton men able to bear arms. See Samuel Hopkins Emery, History of Taunton, Massachusetts, from its settlement to the present time (Syracuse, N. Y., D. Mason & Co., 1893), 34-35 (Richard Burt); digital images, Hathi Trust.
The 1893 claim lacks foundation, as no other records are seen to support Richard's presence at Taunton prior to the record of his son's guardianship. (So it is possible he wasn't on the 1643 list because he wasn't a man then of Taunton.)
Location of Birth. In my brief overview of Richard Burt's profile and sources, I found nothing to suggest or confirm that he was a man of Dorchester, "Devon," England.
His son's profile sports a claim for an apparent baptism "9 Jun 1628 in Marsh Caundle, Dorset, England," but it lacks commentary as to how that baptism would have been proven to be the man who was later of Taunton.

p. 134 of "History" gives the report of a town council meeting in 1680 listing people who owned land as of that date and Richard Burt is listed having rights to land that was his father's, but that doesn't prove that his father had the land in 1638. I didn't find anything for any Richard Burt in vol 12 of Shurtleff (Plymouth Deeds) but Emery said that original deed was lost so not surprising.

Thank you for your comment.
(1) Yes, post-humous. Aside from his name (only) as an "ancient purchaser," the first Taunton reference to Richard Burt in a historical record seems that of his son's guardianship, 26 October 1647.
(2) See Cheryl's comment from July 2021, indicating Richard Burt does not appear in Anderson's Great Migration Directory (2015).
In his 1893 work, Emery interchanged the term "first settlers" with the names of the "ancient purchasers." (See p. 29, where "...recognized by these first settlers ..." and then "Names of the forty-six ancient purchasers").
I'm not questioning whether the man was an "ancient purchaser" in 1638, but whether he was ever of Taunton prior his death (as opposed to an investor in the settlement). As per Cheryl's comment, Robert Charles Anderson seems not to have designated Richard Burt as an early resident.
Hope this helps clarify where/how the confusion/conflict may arise, and how we might reason some resolution for the purpose of this WikiTree profile.--Gene

Thank you again. You wrote, "... report of a town council meeting in 1680 ... doesn't prove that his father had the land in 1638"
I agree. The town is granting his father's "rights" to the son.
There is another reference to the elder Richard's land ... I am in search of that now. --Gene
The linked spouse seems a rendered version of a woman named Jane Adams, who married a Richard Burt at St Mary, Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England, 21 November 1624. See "Weddings at St. Mary, Whitechapel, London," The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, 23 (1891):47; digital images, Hathi Trust.
During my brief work on Richard Burt's profile, I found nothing to support that the name of his wife is known, much less that he was the man who married at London to Jane Adams.

Richard Burt's name appears as one of the "forty-six ancient purchasers of Taunton" (1638), but is there any evidence that he had settled at that place or elsewhere in New England prior to his death (by 26 October 1647)?
The list of those who were "ancient purchasers," including Richard Burt, appear in Samuel Hopkins Emery, History of Taunton, Massachusetts, from its settlement to the present time (Syracuse, N. Y., D. Mason & Co., 1893), 29; digital images, Hathi Trust.
See Cheryl's comment from July 2021, indicating Richard Burt does not appear in Anderson's Great Migration Directory (2015).
Thank you for whatever assistance you are able to provide.--Gene

The father of Richard Burt is unknown.
Richard Burt-2374 needs to be disconnected as Richard Burt-1203's father, and then the two profiles merged. Alternatively we change the name of the father to Unknown Burt and adjust his estimated dates, so we can keep Richard and James as brothers.

The source [1] with birth date for his supposed son Rychard is 27 Oct. 1605, but Richard Burt Jr's profile says he was born June 9, 1628. Something is off. I don't think the parents or the child in the familysearch record are for the Richard Burt family that migrated. My opinion.
And if that record is not for the migrant family, that calls into question the LNAB for Richard Burt Senior's wife. We have a NYGBR source [2] that says a Richard Burt and Jane Adams were married in London on October 16, 1624. But how do we know that couple is the same as the migrating couple?
Regarding Barbados... I don't know if that was father or son who went to Barbados. Needs research.
And like you say, Anne B., there isn't a citation for the children...
I'm going to start from scratch and see if I can get as close to the facts as possible on this profile.
I'm going to proceed to delete what doesn't belong on this biography.
