Hi DA

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome or Opera browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles which have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, log into WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment. Alternatively, click my name to visit my profile. From there, you can leave a comment, or send a private message.

Hey DA,

Thank you for joining us! I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions? What do you think of our editing system so far? Thanks for adding all those sourced profiles.

Please let me know if you have any questions about WikiTree. To contact me, log in to WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment to be sure that I will be notified. Hi

Thanks for reaching out. I have to admit this is a little intimidating. One thing about which I am unclear, is when it's OK or not to make edits. There was one profile without a manager to which I posted comments, then after a week, I made edits (corrected a wife/husband relationship), then was chastised in a private email by a cousin. So, what kind of edit requires permission and what doesn't? Also, when is it OK, or not, to add images or other supporting documentation that reinforces existing data? Does everything have to be approved by the profile manager? Or can it just be added if it confirms the data there? To have to get approval for each time you want to help, and wait for a response, is very time consuming. I understand the intent and collaboration concept of the site. But it is almost prohibitive for easy participation. Maybe that will make it stronger. thx for your guidance

Hey DA,

What a shame you had a bad experience. No user (see Honor Code III and IV) should send such emails. You can point them to those rules and ask for help if you feel like it. See the problems with members section.

That aside. When may you edit, and when is it better to edit. That is a very good question, and it takes quite some 'getting used to.

In general: you need sources to prove your edits. If you have the sources that information is really wrong about that person, so you are very sure you are not looking at the profile of someone similar, with the same name, maybe even similar parents/spouse, and there is no profiles manager on the profile, then you should feel free to edit.

If the profile has a profile manager you should post a comment on the profile and show your sources there as well (if you don't have sources, you can ask, but you should start searching the sources). Then give the profile manager quite some time to respond. Some may respond within a few days, but most will take days to weeks.

If you feel like you have been waiting long enough, it is a good thing to click on the name of the profile manager and see if they have been making edits recently. All edits are stored, and you can see anyones history. If you see that the profile manager has not been making edits in the last couple of months, then feel free to edit, or follow the 'unresponsive managers' procedure.

Big exceptions: project protected profiles. Some profiles attract a lot of attention and have a long history of (bad) edits. You should never edit those, but really look at the comments and decide then. The same is true for pre-1700 profiles. First learn your way around before you start working on those. You will need to get certified for that period as well. So please do not copy information from other trees into WikiTree.

You may send me the edits you have made and were told not to make them, so I can have a look if you like. But in general: follow your instinct, be nice to others and tell people if you do not feel like they are treating you fair. I have met a lot of nice people here, and try to ignore the unpleasant ones.

I hope this helps a bit, as said: send me the profile ID (name-number) if you would like some more in depth advice,

Michel

Hi DA and thank you for upgrading, 😊

I am very pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Happy tree climbing
