John was born before 1845. He joined the 10th (AKA 12th) Mississippi Cavalry, Baxter's Battallion, in 1862. He was captured June 14 1863 in Hardin County, Tennessee. He was taken to Alton Military Prison on July 4, contracted smallpox, and died of it on Small Pox Island on 29 Dec 1863. His name is on both the Alton Confederate Cemetery monument and the Smallpox Island Monument.
