John provided material support to Revolutionary forces during the War of Independence. He was paid for this several times:

• 6 September, 1782: 20 pounds, 5 shillings
• 20 August, 1783: 2 pounds, 15 shillings
• 14 January, 1784: 31 pounds, 15 shillings, and 4 pence

The amounts were paid by the Salisbury District of the State of North Carolina.

John lived at Salsbury, Surry, North Carolina in 1800.^[8] and in 1810.^[9][10][11]

John died 1812 or February 1813^{[12][13][14][15]} at Surry County, North Carolina.

IN the name of God, Amen. Whereas I, John Burcham Senior of Surry County and state of North Carolina, being weakly in body, but in perfect mind and memory, calling to mind the mortality of my body, that it is appointed for all mankind once to die, do make this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form as follows, to wit: First and principly, I commit my soul to God that gave it: and as for my body , I commit that to the earth, to be buried at the discretion of my family and friends. And as touching my worldly substance that the Lord blessed me with, I leave to, dispose of, bequeath and distribute in the following manner, viz. First, my will is that all my just debts in due time be paid by my Executors hereafter named. Second, my will is that my son John Burcham shall have my land lying in Virginia, in Grayson County on Crooked Creek, adjoining his brother Levi's land, containing seventy acres. Third, my will is that my son Levi Burcham shall have five shillings. Fourth, my will is that my son Joseph Burcham shall have five shillings. Fifth, my will is that my son Reuben Burcham shall have five shillings. Sixth, my will is that my son Shubel Burcham shall have my land and plantation, where I now live containing two hundred and fifty acres, be the same more or less. And, also my land in the Ridges in company with Jacob Jessop. Seventh, my will is that my household furniture, and stock, working tools and two tracts of land, one of a hundred acres, the other of seventy acres lying on the North Fork of Tom's Creek, and the whole of the balance of my estate, be equally divided among my six daughters agreeable to what they have already had. Viz: Mary Hiatt, Anne Ritter, Elizabeth Ballard, Isbel Beeson, Susanna Denny, and Sarah Fletcher. Eighth, I constitute, ordain and appoint my esteemed son-in-law William Fletcher and my beloved son John Burcham, the whole and sole executors of this my last Will and Testament; to order and dispose thereof according to my Will, to the best of their knowledge. Ninthly and lastly, I hereby revoke, disannul and make void all other Wills Testaments or Legacies that may appear in my name, except such legacies as may be lawfully distributed in my life time: declaring and confirming this, and no other, to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof, I the said John Burcham Senior, have set my hand and affixed my seal, this fourth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven. • Some family researchers in recent years have attached a middle name of Henry to John Burcham. As of yet, no primary sources have been found to support the addition of any middle name to the name of John Burcham.
