A transcription of Thomas Bugg's baptism record from Clergy returns of New South Wales, in the Manning River District, County of Gloucester & Macquarie, shows that Thomas was born on 17 March 1850 and baptised on 21 April 1855[1]. Neither the location of his birth nor of the baptism are given on the transcription. However, his parent's details are given with his father James Bugg an Overseer of Sheep, and his mother Mary Bugg, their residence at the time of the baptism was Gloucester. The Australia, Birth Index record has his birth registered in the Manning River District, New South Wales, Australia, with James and Mary as the parents.
The name of his mother as Mary does not agree with the fact that Charlotte's Death Certificate shows Thomas to be the last of Charlotte's children, with his age given as 11 at the time of Charlotte's death in 1861. Her son William was the informant for her Death Certificate.
On 11 January 1897 he was admitted to Darlinghurst Gaol, with his age given as 47. He had been sentenced to 2 years in gaol at the Taree sessions following his arrest that was gazetted in the New South Wales, Australia, Police Gazettes on 13 October 1897. Like all the children of James and Charlotte, except Mary Ann and John, he never went to school, though he was able to read.
Thomas' 1903 Death Certificate shows that he had been a Stockman aged 52 at the time of his death on 4 November 1903, though he had been in hospital for 6 weeks before he died of stomach cancer. He had been living at Dungog. His parents are indicated to be James Bugg, a Farmer, and Charlotte (Aboriginal). Thomas was buried in the Church of England Cemetery at Dungog on 5 November 1903. Thomas was not married. His place of birth could not be deciphered but was in New England, New South Wales[2].
In a brief death notice in the Dungog Chronicle: Durham and Gloucester Advertiser of 6 November 1903, he was described as "A well known identitiy of the Coopla curripa and Gloucester River districts. He was a middle aged man and well known throughout the district."
