Biography

Henry was born in 1842. He is the son of Curtis Buckman and Sabrina Fillmore. In the 1860 census Henry was in Chazy, Clinton, New York.[1]

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Records 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

DIED AT 26 YEARS OLD - From October 11, 1861, to February 1866, Henry C. Buckman was with the 96th Infantry. His grandfather, Septa Fillmore, a hotel keeper from Chazy, was brevetted colonel for his actions in the War of 1812 in Plattsburgh. Septa’s daughter, Sabrina, married Curtis Buckman, a farmer who had crossed the lake from Grand Isle to farm in Chazy.

When Henry was nineteen years old and living on his parent’s farm, he was recruited as one of five sergeants in Captain James Sweeney’s Company F with men from Chazy, Rouses Point, Mooers and Plattsburgh. They left for Washington on March 11, 1862, with 83 men. On April 8th, Henry was promoted to first sergeant. By mid-April 1862. they were at the Siege of Yorktown and spent the next few months on the Peninsula. In December they went on the Expedition from New Berne to Goldsboro, NC, and stayed in that state for the next year. In 1864. While they were in North Carolina, he was promoted to second lieutenant then first lieutenant.

The regiment fought in the Petersburg battlefield in 1864 and Henry was again promoted when Captain Walter Benedict was killed in action on May 16, 1864, at Drewry’s Bluff. The regiment stayed in the Petersburg area until the end of the war and Henry even spent a couple of months as a prisoner at the beginning of 1865. They stayed in service performing various necessary police and garrison duties until they were mustered out on February 6, 1866, at City Point, VA, Henry returned to Chazy and, in September 1867, was appointed Postmaster for Chazy. Sadly, He only died in Lucas, OH, on August 19, 1869, at 26 years of age. His body was brought back to Chazy, and he was buried in the Buckman family plot in Riverview Cemetery. His parents both died in 1890 and were buried beside him.
