Disputed Origins

Cross of St George
William Buck was born in England.
According to the Robert Charles Anderson in Great Migration, William Buck of Cambridge had unknown parents, an unknown origin, one wife whose name is unknown, and a single child named Roger (Rodger). Please do not attach parents, additional wives, or children to this profile without discussing it with the PGM project on g2g. Thank you.[1]

Much of this biography came from a geni.com entry which had no primary sources itself[2] and has apparently been revised to more accurately reflect what is actually known of William Buck.

Biography

Birth & Baptism

Unknown although an estimated birth year of 1585 comes from his reported age of 50 in 1635 when he immigrated on the "Increase". This profile previously stated an origin of Padbury, Buckinghamshire without source. Many other reasonable examples are found easily such as William Buck, son of John, christened 29 Jul 1587 at Snaith, Yorkshire.[3] A mother of "Elizabeth Sherman", again without source has also been proposed.

Marriage & Children

Note: the William Buck who married Margaret Neave in Lincolnshire, England in 1617 IS NOT PROVEN to be this William Buck, there is no known connection. However, he still shows a wife of Margaret Neave in his data section to help with research and to prevent people from re-creating and re-attaching her.

Per "Great Migration", William Buck, who immigrated on the "Increase" (age 50) with son Rodger (age 18) was a widower and is not known to have remarried in New England. Certainly a wife was not listed with him on the Increase. His son Rodger (or Roger) was his executor; no other children are known.

Immigration

William & Roger enrolled as passengers of the "Increase" at London on 15 Apr 1635.[4] William then appeared in Cambridge land records (grants and sales) from 1639-1645.[1] He is not known to have been made a freeman, held office or joined the church so Anderson described him as "not fully integrated into the communal life of his town or colony."

Death & Estate

William died on 24 Jan 1657/58 and the inventory of his estate was taken on 27 Jan 1657/58 by his son Roger.[5] Anderson mentions no will, likely William died intestate.[1]

Research Notes

Most interestingly, the passenger list of the "Unity" (sailing from Weymouth 12 Sep 1635 to Massachusetts) listed a William Buck with "his wife and family"[6] Could this have been a second man who was connected to one or more of the spouses below?

This profile was at one point given 2 spouses as shown below. One was Margaret Good/Goode, m. William Buck in 1606. Margaret was dau. and heir of Michael Good of Sussex, Lord of the castle of Frome, Somersetshire" based on a geni.com reference which has since been changed to show her with no name. Who Margaret Goode was, she was not known to be a wife of this William Buck[2] These children were listed on the profile.

  1. Infant Buck (1599– ) infant death
  2. John Buck (1600–1665)
  3. Isaac (Lt.) Buck (1601–1695)
  4. James Buck (1603–1658)
  5. Margaret Buck (1605–1662)
  6. Richard (Rev) Buck (1610–1669)
  7. Cornet John Buck (1613–1693)
  8. Francis Buck (1615– )
  9. Roger Buck (1617–1693)

Another family originally listed was this group, some of whom lived in Wethersfield and may have been children of that William Buck but this is speculative:

Spouse (2): Margaret Neave (1585–1657)
Marriage: 07 Sep 1618, Anderby, Lincolnshire, England[7]
  1. Thomas Buck (1618–1661), no proof of origin on WikiTree, emigrated to Virginia, not Massachusetts
  2. William Buck (1619– ), no proof of origin on WikiTree, died in Woburn, Mass
  3. Susanna Buck (1622–1660), no proof of origin on WikiTree, died in Reading, Mass
  4. Samuel Buck (1623–1724)
  5. Grace Buck (1624–1703), no proof of origin on WikiTree, no proof of surname, Jacobus speculated she was connected to Emmanuel Buck as a sister, she is now connected to William Buck of Wethersfield, Connecticut
  6. Emanuel "Enoch" Buck (1623–1695), no proof of origin on WikiTree, lived at Wethersfield
  7. Henry Buck (1626–1712), no proof of origin on WikiTree but did live in Wethersfield so possibly related to Emmanuel
  8. Infant Buck (1627–1628) infant death

This latter couple married in Anderby, Lincolnshire. A William Buck also had children Elizabeth, Symon and Richard christened about 70 miles away in Lincolnshire (at Edenham and Stamford) between 1628 and 1632 (found on familysearch.org parish register searches) but there is no proof it is the same William Buck.

A supposed diary of this Martha Buck Harwood (indicating a remarriage to a Harwood after Buck's death? Or maiden name Harwood? In any case, not known to be a wife of this William Buck currently) supposedly said that William had 9 sons, all of whom eventually joined him in New England.[2] The geni article apparently originally also described him thusly:

...son and heir of Nathaniel, son of John of the ancient family of Lastonashe, parish of Kemfey (Kempsey) three miles south of the city of Worcester in Valley between the Severn and the Avon, 'the vale of Worcester,' a Midland County of England.

Again, if the "Unity" passenger list is correct then some of these other family members may belong to the "other" William Buck. This profile originally said that William Buck, plowright of Cambridge, Mass and father of Roger returned to England and then came back on the Unity but it seems more likely that it was two separate men.

Why does the profile have an un-named 2nd wife and further down, has her name and a list of children?

The same question regarding his parents; none listed in the profile, but further down, they are listed?

Sherry, if you read through the G2G forum post listed on this profile and through the comments, it looks like this may be a co-mingling of 2 different William Bucks (or possibly, just a bunch of unsourced stuff made up and added to the one documented William Buck). People have been asking for help cleaning this up since at least 2017 and nobody has really driven it home. Your contribution would be more than welcome if you can separate fact from fiction, or from a second real person on this profile.

Brad - thank you for answering; I just ran into this situation yesterday. A lot of researching for records that fit and After studying the profiles and sources and comments, It is confusing; Roger, the 18 yr old son fits a first wife scenario - age wise. There is a marriage record for William Bucke and Margaret Neave in Lincolnshire, England 7 Sep 1618 which also fits give or take a year for son Roger.

There is a record of a Margaret Neave immigrating in 1637 with a nameless granddaughter - according to the immigration List I saw. There is a New England marriage license for William Buck in 1617 in Cambridge - wife's name not given, but since this William didn't immigrate until 1635, it doesn't fit this William Buck. Since my ancestor was Henry Buck I suspect that William is not the father I'm looking for.

I noted the Lincolnshire marriage, unfortunately no way to know if it's this couple although the timing fits well. If we can ever find a baptism record for Roger, that will help a lot. The 1617 Cambridge (Mass) "marriage" record is an unfortunate auto-aggregation from either ancestry or familysearch, they create a lot of fake "sources" with co-mingled and unsupported data like this. Obviously nobody from England was getting married in Massachusetts in 1617. If your ancestor is Henry Buck-41 (#7 under Margaret Neave, which could be completely wrong but is kept here for history/research purposes) his profile sources are a mess, maybe you could clean those up. The will of Elizabeth Welles seems like an interesting clue as well as the residence in Wethersfield, CT with other Bucks. Good luck!

Just barely got started, as I said, on this ancestor. But Henry Buck of Wethersfield, Hartford CT seems to be a strong possibility. The Buck family history is loaded with information – but no ancestors except the will of the grandmother that I’ve found so far. It seems as if his father was also a William and Henry age 21 had an older brother Emanuel age 23 and possibly a brother Thomas. Henry married in 1660 and Thomas in 1665 (Weathersfield Ch. And Town Record.) The same record has Henry Buck bn. 1623, died July 7, 1712, age 86.
I think you're right that some of the Bucks listed under Margaret Neave, while there is no proof at all that they are her children or related to her in any way, were likely siblings or at least relatives as they all ended up in Wethersfield, CT.

Clearly there is some conflation in this profile. The identify the immigrant, William Buck is described in Robert Charles Anderson's "Great Migration." here:subscriber's link

It says he had one marriage by about 1617 to a wife whose given name and surname are unknown. His wife died by 1635; and he was a widower when he migrated; seems did not remarry. They had only 1 child who was born about 1617, married by about 1642 to a wife whose given name was Susan.

Without objection, Is there someone from the PGM project who would like to do a re-build this profile? Evidently it represents two people named William Buck, and they need to be teased apart. Thank you.

Cheryl PGM Leader

Is there a scholarly, reliable source for Margaret Neave being his wife? Her profile is unsourced.
I have sourced it with:

"England Marriages, 1538–1973 ", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJCL-VZK : 13 March 2020), Margaret Neave in entry for William Bucke, 1618.

Please can someone add 7 Sep 1618 as the marraige date and Anderby, Lincolnshire, England as the location?

thank you Chris....................................
There are a significant number of children with links in the bio that don't actually have him as a father. Should they be attached to him, or do they belong to a different parent?

Perhaps one of the PMs will clean up the profile to just show his known children, please?

Where's the proof that Emmanuel (Enoch), Grace, and Henry were the children of William Buck and Margaret Neave?? I already indicated a while ago there is no indication for this. I believe there are two separate Buck families. These three are siblings and lived in Wethersfield, CT.

Buck-3143 and Buck-155 appear to represent the same person because: Not sure why these were set to Unmerged Match; they clearly represent the same individual; the year difference in the death is related to the double-dating system used during that era.

For some reason, this profile triggered an 811, uncleaned after merge. I don't see why, even after watching the wonderful video!
Buck-5733 and Buck-155 appear to represent the same person because: same birth year and country. same death year and place. same source to GM. Please merge. Thank you.

I agree with Victoria's comment below.

Without objection, I will remove all citations that are not direct, scholarly research, as well as any that is considered scholarly research but does not apply to this profile of William Buck-155 of Cambridge. All Geni, FindaGrave, WeRelate, personal websites, unsourced diaries, Ancestry Family Trees, Rootsweb will be removed.

Are there any objections?

Does anyone have information for the diary of Martha Buck Howard? What is the basis for her diary? Does it contain reliable/dependable source notes?
