Early Childhood
On September 22, 1850, Elias, age 5 (listed as age 6 on the census), and his mother, Polly Hornberger, age 24, were listed on the 1850 census as residents of the Jacob and Barbara Hostetle residence. The residence was located in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They were both listed as being born in Pennsylvania.[1]
On June 26, 1860, Elias, age 15 (listed as age 14 on the census), was listed on the 1860 census as a resident of the Christian and Susanna Burkholder residence. The residence was located in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was listed as being born in Pennsylvania.[2]

Military
On November 3, 1862, Elias enlisted in the army. He was assigned to Company D. 2nd Battalion, 18th US Infantry. He served as a musician.[3] He mustered out of the army on November 3, 1865.
After the Civil War
On June 23, 1870, Elias, age 25 (listed as age 26 on the census), was listed on the 1870 census as a resident of the Madison and Julia Powell residence. The residence was located in Towanda Township, McLean County, Illinois. He was listed as a farm hand, as being born in Pennsylvania and as being a male citizen over the age of 21.[4]
Marriage
On Wednesday, October 12, 1870, Elias, age 25, married Mary Jane Shough in McLean County, Illinois, USA.[5]
Family
On June 22, 1880, Elias, age 35 (listed as age 35 on the census), is listed on the 1880 census as the head of household with his wife, Jane, age 31, and 4 children. They were living in the Village of Towanda, McLean County, Illinois. His occupation is listed as cigar maker. His parent's birthplace are both listed as Pennsylvania.[6]
In 1900, Elias E Buch (55) was living in Calcasieu, Louisiana, United States. He owned his mortgage free home. His wife, Jane (52) took care of the home and family. The census recorder noted that she had given birth to seven children, and six were living. Their children were: Joseph (27), Lewis (23), Gertrude (20), Millie (18) and Anna (15). [7]
Death
He passed away in 1902.
Burial
Elias is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings, Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana, USA.[8][9]
