John was born in 1808. He passed away in 1862.
John Selby Brian was the son of William and Susannah Selby Brian. He married Sophia Joy 12-24-1829 in Cadiz, Harrison Co., OH. Their children were Margaret, Susannah Jane, Mary Elizabeth, James Crawford, Thomas Decker, David Cunningham, Sarah Rebecca, Bazel Ridgeway and Isaac Wesley Brian.
John Selby and two of his sons and three son-in-laws: Jacob S. Kinser, Benjamin C. Long, Isaac Poling, James C. Brian, and David C. Brian all joined the 58th OH Inf. Co. "K". John Selvey died at Pittsbburg Landing, Shiloh Battle Ground,Tn., the age of 53 years. He had been wounded, but this was not the direct cause of his death. He took an epidemic bowel trouble and died. His son James Crawford was with him and knew where he was buried, so after the war he could move his body back to OH. But later all the graves were moved to what is now the National cemetery. It is now impossible to find his grave. From pension records: John Selvey died of typhoid brought on by exposure. After being wounded April 7th, 1862. He was also in the battle of Fort Donelson, TN Feb. 14, 15, 16, 1862. Sophia Joy Brian received $12.00 a month widow's pension.
