Biography

Thomas Gambrell, a Gambrell researcher and author, wrote:

James Bruton b 1710-1720 abt Lawnes Creek Parish, Surry Co VA m possibly Mary BRANCH (unverified) , died Anson Co NC or vicinity (unverified); mentioned in the 1735 will of JAMES BRUTON (above, husband of MARY SEWARD) as grandson. Several of his uncles & cousins from Surry Co VA moved to Craven, Johnston, Edgecombe & Dobbs Co NC before the Revolutionary War, so it is not inconceivable that JAMES would have gone to NC also. Mary BRANCH, daughter of FRANCIS BRANCH & ELIZABETH NORWOOD, of Isle of Wight, Surry & Southampton Co VA, is unverified as wife of James, but from her mother's 1750 Southampton Co VA will, it appears that MARY BRANCH did marry a male BRUTON (of which there were few) and had a daughter SARAH BREWTON who was named in her grandmother's will. Some researchers have indicated that MARY BRANCH married a BREWSTER, because the surname was transcribed incorrectly, but the naming of the granddaughter clearly as "Sarah Brewton" suggests otherwise. . Southampton Co VA is just south of Surry Co VA and is on the North Carolina border. More research to come.Source: Research of Thomas Gambrell; Isle of Wight Co VA records; Surry Co VA wills, Southhampton Co VA wills.
