James Bruce was a British colonial administrator and diplomat. He was Governor of Jamaica from 1842 to 1846, Governor General of British North America (Canada) from 1847 to 1854, and Viceroy of India from 1862 to 1863.
James, 8th Earl of Elgin and 12th Earl of Kincardine, KT, born 20 July, 1811, in London, England, was the second son of Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin and 11th Earl of Kincardine, and Elizabeth Oswald.[1] Elizabeth was his father's second wife.[2]
