Biography

Charles Browne was born around 1810 in Hellingly, Sussex, England the son of Benjamin Browne and Ann Hammond. He was baptised on 3 Feb 1811 at St Peter and St Paul's church in Hellingly.[1]

In 1829, he was convicted of larceny and sentenced to 6 months in prison and a whipping.[2]

Charles married Elizabeth Perry on 25 May 1830 at St Thomas a Becket church in Brightling, Sussex.[3] He was living in Dallington, Sussex at the time. They had one child:

In 1832, Charles was convicted on 5 Apr 1832 at the Sussex Assizes of stealing donkeys and for that crime was sentenced to transportation to Australia. He departed England on the ship Planter on 13 Jun 1832 and arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 13 Oct 1832.[4] [5] [6]

Charles Brown died shortly before 11 Apr 1844 in Parramatta, New South Wales from apoplexy and intemperance.[7] He was buried on 12 Apr 1844 in the St John's Parramatta parish cemetery.[8] Charles was about 34 years old.
