Valentine was born in 1637, and he was 2½ years old when he succeeded his father as the 3rd Baronet Browne, of Mohaliffe, co. Kerry [I., 1622] on 25 April 1640.[1]
He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] to King James II. He gained the rank of Colonel in the Regiment of Foot, for King James II. He was a Commissioner of Oyer and Terminer, County Kerry in February 1687. His last will was dated 7 June 1690. He d. 1694.[2]
He fought in the Battle of Aughrim on 12 July 1691, where he was taken prisoner by the English and Dutch forces. His large estates in counties Kerry and Cork were forfeited through 'his unviolable fidelity to that unfortunate Monarch' King James II.
Sir Valentine Browne 3rd Bt. was created 1st Viscount Kenmare [Ireland] and Baron Castlerosse [Ireland] on 20 May 1689, by King James II, after his disposition by the English Parliament, but while he still possessed his rights as King of Ireland. While he had fought for James II, he never seems to have been formally attainted. This is one of 7 titles duly inscribed on the patent rolls of Ireland, and have never been erased, although he and his successors were never recognized as holding these titles.
He had five sons and four daughters with Jane Plunkett.[3].
The sons were:
James Cardonnell's appeal to the House of Lords in 1730 stated that Valentine died in the month he made his will i.e. June 1690.[9] His will was proved in 1694.[8] This interpretation is supported as it was his son Nicholas who was attainted not him. This would also mean that the "Viscount Kenmare" who fought at Aughrim was his son Nicholas too.
According to a reader letter to the North Munster Antiquarian Journal,[12] Jane Plunkett was the 2nd wife of Sir Valentine Browne (b.1638). His 1st wife was Bridget Purcell (died young; no issue), sister to Col. Nicholas Purcell -- the same Nicholas who later married Ellis, who was Sir Valentine's daughter from his 2nd marriage.
