George Brown was born in England in about 1810. In 1851 he was living at Watten Mains with his wife and children. He described himself as a farmer of 865 acres employing 46 labourers. Living with the family were Frances Purves, George and Mary's niece; Isabella McAdie, a house servant; Catherine Brims, a house servant; Adam Gunn, a farm labourer; John Steven, a farm labourer; John Bremner, a farm labourer; David Henderson, a farm labourer; Alexander McAllan, a farm labourer; James Henderson, a farm labourer; George Sinclair, a farm labourer; Henry Chalmers, a farm labourer; Roderick Gunn, a farm labourer; Violet Henderson, a house servant; Jean Ryrie, a farm servant; Wilhelmina Chalmers, a farm servant; and Jean Gunn, a farm servant. It is likely that John Grant was the farm steward on the property.
By 1861 George was a farmer of 514 acres in Watten. He was possibly widowed by then as Mary is not shown as residing with the family; he was living at Watten House with some of his children and servants.
George was named as the father of William Brown on the latter's 1853 birth and baptism record.
