Richard Brown was born on March 13th, 1693, (13: 1st month: 1693 in old Quaker system) the third child and second son of immigrant Quakers, William Brown and Ann Mercer.[1] His father was an active Elder in the Society of Friends. He was raised in Chester County, southwest of Philadelphia, in William Penn's Quaker-led colony of Pennsylvania.
Richard Brown married three Quaker women.
His first wife, Hannah Reynolds, was born in Chester County in 1695. They were married on November 6, 1717 in Concord Meeting, Chester County, PA.[2] They had 4 sons:[3]
Richard Brown's second wife was Rachel Beeson who was born about 1713, also in Chester County. They were married on 9 February 1731, in West Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania, now Cecil County, Maryland.[4][5] They had no children together. Rachel died in early 1733, possibly in childbirth, a leading cause of death among young women at the time.
On August 19, 1732, Richard Brown was appointed an overseer of the West Nottingham meeting.

Richard Brown's third wife, Mary Norton, was born about 1713 in County Armagh, Ireland and later immigrated to America alongside her brother, Edward Norton III. Richard and Mary were married on October 24, 1733, in West Nottingham, Cecil County, Maryland.[7] They had 3 sons together:[8][2]

Richard and Mary Brown moved south from West Nottingham to Loudoun County, Virginia in 1734, part of a Quaker migration looking for better farms and a new area to settle. [2]
