William Brown was born about 1816 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. He was the son of Robert Brown and Janet Eskdale. [1]
He became a farmer.
William married Mary Johnstone in 1846 in Dumfriesshire. [2] The couple migrated to Victoria (Australia) in 1859 aboard the Ocean Chief, with their first four children, settling around Ballarat and the gold-diggings. After trying his hand at gold mining, William returned to farming. Mary was kept busy extending the family.
Aged 58 years, he passed away in 1874 and is buried in Ballarat Old Cemetery. [3]
