Biography

Alice (Brower) Hoffs was a centenarian, living to age 110.

Alice Mae Brower was born on February 05, 1902 in Heath Township, Allegan, Michigan, United States. Her parents were Herman Brower and Alice Klomparens.[1] Alice was christened at their local parish church in Allegan, Michigan, United States.[2]

In the 1910 census Alice was 8 years old and living with her parents and 4 siblings at their home in Allegan Ward 2, Allegan, Michigan, United States.[3] During the 1920 census Alice was 15 years old and was living with her parents, older sister Bertha and her grandfather Henry Klomparens (age 81) in Allegan, Michigan, United States.[4]

Alice married Marinus Adrian Hoffs, a physician, on 31 March 1927 in , Allegan, Michigan, United States.[5]

In the 1930 census Alice was 28 years old and living with her husband and infant daughter in Lake Odessa, Ionia, Michigan, United States.[6] By 1940 census they had 3 children and the help of a servant at their home in Lake Odessa, Odessa Township, Ionia, Michigan Territory, United States.[7]

Alice Mae Hoff died at the age of 110 on October 31, 2012 in Kalamazoo, Madison, Nebraska, United States. [8]

Mrs. Alice Mae Hoffs, age 110, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012.
Alice was born to Herman and Alice (Klomparens) Brower in Hamilton, on February 25, 1902. She graduated cum laude in 1923 from Hope College and taught school in Wayland, for two years. During her summers, Alice worked in her father's bank in Hamilton.
Alice married Marinus A. Huffs on March 31, 1927 and together they moved to Lake Odessa, where he established his medical practice. After Dr. Hoffs' death in 1971, Alice enjoyed traveling with her family, visiting the Holy Land, Greece, Turkey, Wales, England, Germany, Poland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Nassau.
Before moving to Kalamazoo, she served the Grand Rapids District Women's Society, was involved in her local church's mission program and was the Central United Methodist Church organist for 45 years. Second to her love of music was her interest in books. She was also interested in the civic life of Lake Odessa, helping to organize a community ambulance service.
In 1975, Alice moved to Friendship Village in Kalamazoo and served on various committees and was treasurer of the Resident Council, as well as helping on the Music Committee at Friendship Village.
She will be deeply missed by her daughters, Louise (Al) Peppel, Carole (Rev. Dr. Robert) Bos, and Jayne (Thomas) Cummings; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa.
