Regiment(s): Company I, 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry

Narcisse was born about 1845. He was the son of Jean Baptiste Brouillet and Sophie Bourgault. He passed away after 1916.

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Record 181-1865 Facebook Page:

BECAME ILL IN THE SOUTH - In the early 1840s, Jean-Baptiste Brouillet and his wife, Sophie LaCroix, brought their family from Beloeil, about 30 miles east of Montreal, to live in the Town of Ausable. Their son, Narcisse, was their second child born in the United States. He was born in Keeseville in 1845.

When he was eighteen years old, Narcisse was mustered into the 2nd Veteran Cavalry which was just organizing. The company clerk recorded him as Nelson Brewyer and throughout his military career, his name was spelled many different ways. He was assigned to Company I as one of the 102 privates that were recruited. However, before the regiment left for Washington fifteen of the men either deserted or went absent without leave.

The regiment spent the rest of the year in Washington patrolling the city until finally, in December, Company M, which was recruited mainly in New York City, joined them. In February 1864, they were ordered to join the Red River Campaign in Louisiana under General Nathanial Banks. March, April and May were spent on the campaign which was suggested by Bank’s friend Abraham Lincoln. The campaign was considered a failure and did not have a major impact on the war either way.

From the end of May 1864, until the end of the war, the regiment fought along the Mississippi River in Louisiana and Mississippi and in 1865, fought in Florida and Alabama. Nelson became ill and was sent to hospital in Albany. While there, he was discharged on August 1, 1865.

Nelson came back to Clinton County and in 1870, was working on a farm in Ingraham as a farm laborer. He moved to Vermont and married Lizzie Planchette, and the family moved to Rhode Island where he worked as a carpenter. In later life, Nelson became ill with heart problems and was admitted to the Veterans Hospital in Togas, ME, in 1916. By this time his wife had died and his daughter. Aurelia, who lived in Massachusetts was his principal contact.
