Private Ellis Brock served with the U.S. Army, Alabama Infantry during the Spanish-American War. Service Started: Apr 30, 1898 Unit(s): Company K, First Reg't. of Alabama Volunteers Service Ended: Oct 31, 1898
Ellis was born on 06 May 1876 in Walhalla, Oconee County, South Carolina; he was the youngest child of Anderson Brock and Jane Day.[1]
He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, enlisting on 30 April 1898 as a Private in Company K, First Regiment of Alabama Infantry Volunteers, and discharged on 31 Oct 1898.[2][3]
By 1910 he is listed as a farmer and head of household in Martin Community of Anderson County. Living with him are a 25-year-old nephew, Henry W. Brock, and a 44-year-old female, Annie E. Brock. She is shown on the census as Ellis' wife of ten years, but I feel the census-taker may have mistaken their relationship. I believe Annie was Ellis' first cousin, daughter of Ellis' father's brother Enos.[4] When Ellis filed a registration card for the WWI draft in 1918, he listed Annie E. Brock as his nearest relative.[5]Perhaps further research will prove the relationship between Ellis and Annie E. Brock.
By 1920, Ellis had married Ella Slayton (Moore), a widow with two children, and they were living in Bamberg, Bamberg County, South Carolina, where Ellis was working as an automobile mechanic.[6] (Note: The census taker spelled automobile as two words: "auto mobile.") In 1922, the Brocks were living in Columbia, South Carolina.[7]
By 1930, the Brocks had moved to a farm in Shelby County, Alabama.[8]
They had at least seven children:
Jessie Moore (1910-1920) (Step-Daughter)
Alice Moore (1903-) (Step-Daughter)
Rosa Lee Moore (1905-) (Step-Daughter)
Ellar R. (1920-)
Ellis Mathew (1923-1951)
Ella M. (1924-)
James Westley (1925-1995)
Alberta (1925-1990)
Billy William (1928-2005)
John Thomas (1929-1948)
Ellis passed away on 9 Mar 1940 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and was buried in Ashville, St. Clair County, Alabama.[9][10]
