"Col. John Brinckerhoff by T.VAN IVYCK Brinckerhoff, East Fishkill, NY ,more than any other man of the name, was the intimate and personal friend of General Washington. He married Jannetje Van Voorhees, daughter of Johannes Coerten Van Voorhees, of Fishkill, and was married March 12, 1725. He had two sons and three daughters. His eldest daughter Aeltje, deceased, married Doctor Theodorus Van Wyck, and had eight children. His other two daughters, Barbaretie and Diana, both died as young teens. One of these was sixteen years old, and the other eighteen. His son, Dirck, was only twenty-five years old when he died, April 16, 1764. He outlived all his children, and spent the later years of his life in ministering to and supplying the wants of his grand-children! and provided for them all in his will. He died May 26, 1785, in the eighty-third year of his age, and his wife, Jannetje, died November 11, 1792 aged eighty eight years." [2]

"During the Revolution, when the Continental Army was centered in Fishkill, George Washington was John Brinckerhoff’s guest during the fall and winter of 1778. He stayed in bedroom no. 3 in back of the parlor on the west side of the house. In the tradition of the Brinckerhoff family, as the story goes, the “motherly” Mrs. Brinckerhoff saw to it personally that the Commander-in-Chief was tucked in his bed – warm and cozy on cold winter nights."
