Biography

Charles Frederick Brighting was born in London in 1845, the son of Saul Brighting, a cordwainer, and Mary Ann Weeber. He arrived with his mother in Lyttelton in 1858 on board the Zealandia, after his father died. His mother died soon after landing. [1]

Charles set up a shoe making business in Kaiapoi. He married in 1874 and he and his wife Sarah had six children.

Charles passed away in 1895, after being found unconscious in his shop.

Brighting.— Feb. 2, at Kaiapoi, Charles Frederick Brighting, in his forty-ninth year. Deeply regretted.[2]
It is with regret that we record the death of Mr C. Brighting, of Kaiapoi, which took place at his residence, Poraki Street, about noon on Saturday, from a second attack of apoplexy. Deceased went to his shop in Charles Street on Monday last, apparently in his usual health, but was afterwards found on the floor in a fit by Mr Newman. He was removed home, and showed slow signs of recovery. On Saturday a second fit seized him and he never recovered consciousness. Mr Brighting was an old resident of Kaiapoi, where ho carried on the business of a boot and shoemaker. He joined the Sons and Daughters of Temperance when the Order was first started in Kaiapoi. He was a member of the local Fire Brigade for a very long time, being foreman for a number of years, and was also for several years a town councillor. He was of a vary quiet disposition, and was respected by everybody in and around Kaiapoi. He leaves a wife and a large family to mourn his death.[3]

A framed photograph of him was hung in the Kaiapoi Fire Station. [4]

He is buried in Kaiapoi. [5]
