Catherine (Bretthauer) Heinze was a Volga German.

Catharina Bretthauer was born in June 1888 in Volga, Russia.^[1] She was the daughter of George Bretthauer and Anna Pfeif.

She came with her family to America in 1893. They departed from Bremen on 17 Aug 1893 via S.S. Dresden and arrived on 2 Sep 1893 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.^[2]

Oddly, the family has two passenger records of arriving in the US. Both are aboard the "Dresden." Maybe they first put in to Baltimore, and then the ship was directed to go to New York, as both records have the same passenger list?

The family settled in Russell, Kansas.^[3]

Mari Katrina married to Reinhart David Heinze in 1908.^[4]

Their only child (unknown gender and name) was born and died on Apr 30th, 1909 and she died on May 1.^[5]

Her obituary says her cause of death was a "result of the burns she suffered from a gasoline stove affair last week." I wonder if their child was born early and/or stillborn due to this incident. Since she died just a day after the baby, their combined funeral was held on the same day.

Interestingly, her gravestone shows her name as Marikatrina, all one word.
