Leslie Brett is an Anzac who served in World War One.
Leslie Henry Brett was born in 1893. His parents were Arthur Roland Brett and Eva Laura (neé Barker) Brett
He was a printer with the Brett Printing and Publishing Co.Ltd. for the Auckland Star
He volunteered for the 'Advance Party' of the Samoa Expeditionary Force in August 1914, organized to seize German wireless station at Samoa at the outbreak of war with Germany. [1]
In 1916, was commission as Flight Sub-Lieutenant with the British Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).
He died 22nd July 1917, and is buried in East Mudros Military Cemetery, Greece [2]
A cablegram received from the Admiralty by Mr Arthur R. Brett states that his son, Sub-Lieut. Leslie H. Brett was killed in a flying accident on July 22.
Sub-Lieut. Brett who was twenty three years of age, was educated at Kings College, subsequently joining the staff of the Auckland Star.
He enlisted on the outbreak of war, and after a term of service with the Samoan Advance Guard, returned to Auckland and obtained his discharge. Having considerable mechanical experience, he went to England and joined the Royal Flying Corps. On completion of his course at the Flying School he was sent on service to the Mediterranean where he participated in several aerial engagements. On one occasion his machine fell into the sea, but he escaped injury.
Two brothers of Sub.Lieutenant Brett are now serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
