Thomas Breen was born in 1881 in Liverpool, England to John Breen and Maria Jane Ramsden. His mother dies when he is 8 months old and he is sent by his father to Canada to be adopted. At the time, it was customary for orphans from the United Kingdom to be sent abroad in English colonies to be adopted, the children were called The Home Children.
He arrives in Canada on June 4th 1893, where he soon realises no one is waiting for him. Two locals, Eugène Talbot and Marie Célina Prince agree to adopt him. He later marries their daughter, Eugénie Talbot, with whom he has 9 children.
He first aquired skills as a blacksmith and later became a successful businessman and manufacturer. In 1906, he hires a well-known architect, Louis Caron Sr., to build his family home. His family home is now a considered a cultural heritage site in Quebec, both for its architecture and for the life story of Thomas Breen.
