Biography

Richard Perry Breeden was born March 6, 1843 in Jackson County, Iowa.[1] His parents were Richard Owen Breeden and Martha (Mitchell) Breeden.[2] The family lived in Jackson County, Iowa throughout his childhood.[3]

Richard enlisted in Company B of the 26th Iowa Infantry on July 22, 1862 and mustered in on September 1. He was discharged at the close of the Civil War on June 6, 1865 at Washington, D.C.[4]

Richard P. Breeden married Clemmantina Hahn on October 8, 1865 at Jackson County, Iowa.[5] The family was living in Jackson County, Iowa at the time of the 1870 US census.[6] The children were Anna age 4, Louisa age 2, and Charles age 8 months. Richard was a cooper.

Richard’s wife Clemmantina or Clementine died about 1778. Richard apparently gave his children to others families to raise. At the time of the 1880 US census, Richard was living as a single bachelor without any of his children.[1] His daughter Ida age 3 was in Kansas as a “ward” with James and Catherine Seems,[7] who had been living three houses down from Richard’s family at the time of the 1860 US census.[3]

Richard P. Breeden married Anna E. (Brinson) Tullis, March 5, 1881 in Madison County, Iowa.[2] The marriage record (on ancestry.com) said that this was his third marriage and her second marriage.

Richard was in Nebraska in July, 1890 when he filed for a pension as an invalid.[8] He was listed as a cooper in the 1894 city directory for Omaha in Douglas County, Nebraska.[9] He was in the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Leavenworth, Kansas from December 28, 1904 to March 4, 1909.[4]

Richard and his family were in Florence in Douglas County, Nebraska at the time of the 1910 US.[10] The children were: Pearl age 25 born in Iowa, Harry age 21 born in South Dakota, Art age 18 born in Nebraska, and Mabel age 17 born in Nebraska.

Richard returned to the Home for Disabled Soldiers from August, 1910 to February 1911, December, 1911 to March 1912, and December 1913 until he died March 21, 1915.[4] He was buried in the Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, Kansas.[11]
