Frances Cordelia "Fannie" Breed, born 21 August 1876 at Rock Mills, Alabama, was a daughter of Talitha Prudence (Eason; 1847-1931) and Richard Jackson Breed (1839-1903). In birth order, she was their fifth child [1]. Frances (misspelled as Francis) C. Breed was censused at age 3 in 1880 with her birth family in Rock Mills, Alabama [2].
She married probably 3 October 1897 in Heard County, Georgia, Charles Thomas Brown (1869-1934). The budding family was enumerated in the 1900 U.S. census of Rock Mills, at which time they had one child [3]. A later census record of 1930 depicts a partial array of their children; grave memorial records identify others:
Lena Belle Brown (1898–1976); married 1) Robert Lee Sims; 2) Charles William Henderson
Eula Gertrude Brown (1901 - 1947 [4]); married Daniel Webster Sims
Alice Ruth Brown (30 Sep 1902 - 15 Dec 1968 [5]); married Bruce Woods McDowell
William Arthur Brown (17 May 1904 – 6 April 1956 [6]); married Ruby Lee Cranford
Della Cordelia Brown (18 November 1906 – 2 June 1992 [7]); married Rudolph D. Tidwell
Ida Theodora Brown (5 November 1908 – 16 December 1985 [8]); married Lester L. Stephens
Rosa Agnes Brown (13 October 1910 – 16 October 1998 [9]); married Lander L. Brooks
Tommy Lou Brown (25 November 1913 – 10 March 1999 [10]); married Robert W. Breed
Sarah Talitha Brown (27 May 1916 – 11 April 1917 [11])
Cora Nell Brown (1919 – ); married J. C. Smith
The 1930 census record [12] is informative, as it illustrates that the four of the children who remained in the household by that time (William, Ida, Tommy Lou, and Cora Nell, were responsible for sustaining the family by working in the cotton textile mill of Rock Mills, Alabama. Many members of the extended family of Fannie (Breed) Brown likewise were pivotal to the economic prosperity of the entire region surrounding Randolph County, Alabama, which was centered on cotton agriculture.
Frances Cordelia (Breed) Brown died 13 Sep 1962. Her grave is in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama, USA, marked by a stone shared with her husband [13].
