Brede (Bredesen) Sander migrated from Norway to the USA.
Brede Bredesen Sander, son of Brede Eriksen Sander and Anne Larsdtr Skaare, was born on 12 Jan 1822 and baptized on 3 Feb in the Brandval church in Grue, Hedmark, Norway.
[1]
The Grue parish records show that he was confirmed on 11 Oct 1835. [2] Though not much else is known about his early life, according to his grandson, William N. M. Johnson, he eventually grew to be 6'3" tall and cut an imposing figure with his bright red hair. [3]
He had a daughter, Gunne, out of wedlock with Anne Gudmundsdtr Seigerud on 10 Nov 1847. Gunne was baptized on 23 Jan 1848. [4]
Brede married his first cousin, Karen Svenningsdtr Huseby, on 6 Apr 1848 at the Brandval church. [5] They had six children: [6]
On 15 Jun 1854 Brede received a federal land grant for 80 acres in the E 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Section 25 in Decorah Township. [7]
Brede passed away on 9 Oct 1905 in Glenwood, Winneshiek, Iowa and is buried at the Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery (see image). [8]
Research Notes
It is interesting that the land mentioned in note 7 was granted to "Brede Bredesen Modam." It appears that he used that surname as a farm name for a while. As late as 1886 the plat book for Glenwood township shows the Sander farm in Section 21 belonging to a "B. B. Mordum." [9]
