JOHANN GEORGE BRAUN, born in the village of Neider Salheim, Province of Hussen Dannstadt, Germany, about 1790. Married to Katerina Dieterwich in 1818. Responding to the call to arms, he served his country, until, failing health, induced by the hardships of war, compelled his discharge and his return to private life. Never of robust physique, he could not fully regain his health, but was able to carry on his tailoring business.
He died in Germany before the allotted three score and ten, in the house in which he was born, which home still stands, and is owned and occupied by a descendant of the Brauns.
The widow, accompanied by her son, Andrew and daughter Laura, her youngest children, and the only ones remaining in Germany, migrated to America in 1851, going directly to Peru, Illinois, to make their home with the son, John Braun, who had been the first to come to America. She died in Peru during the cholera epidemic of 1851-1853. Four hundred years ago the Braun ancestors were in the hills of France with the Huguenots.
