Research Notes

From Ken Brantley of the Brantley Association:

Patrons have had problems with the Joseph Brantleys of Chatham Co, NC and the Georgia Josephs of the late 1700s. Joseph Brantley (b ca 1735), son of John (d 1782) and Hannah, married twice; 1st Ann White, and 2nd Jane White Mathis, wdo of Lewis Mathis. Joseph died in Chatham Co in 1807, leaving a will. He named, among others, a son Joseph, AND a grandson Joseph, son of his son Joseph Jr. The Joseph Jr is believed to be he that died in 1819 in Pulaski Co, GA. His son, Joseph III, apparently came to Georgia too, and one of these two Josephs, is believed to be he who married Mary Crump in NC. This is not proven, but this family mingled with a Crump family in Georgia.

Joseph, above, son of John and Hannah, was brother to Benjamin Brantley, who had a son named, Joseph, born abt 1753 in Granville Co, NC. Benjamin and this son Joseph, went to Wilkes Co, GA in 1784. This Joseph is the ancestor to most Brantleys of Washington Co, Georgia of the 1800s and early 1900. There has never been found however, the name of Joseph’s wife; given name or surname. Perhaps, for this reason, patrons keep attaching names of the spouses of other Joseph. After over a century of research, there is not one record found to even suggest her surname. This is not to say that no one has a creditable record or otherwise knows her surname, but no such evidence has ever been reported to the Brantley Association, nor major genealogy sites known to mainstream researchers.

Now to confuse things further, this Joseph, son of Benjamin, had a son Joseph Brantley Jr, born abt 1774. This younger Joseph, married his cousin, Patsy Brantley. This Joseph and his spouse are too confused with the earlier Josephs with Chatham Co, NC roots.
