Biography

James L. Brannon, born in Davidson County, Tennesse, son of John and Nancy Webb Brannon. James served in the Civil War in Co "L" 1st Arkansas Cavalry (Union). James L., his brother Benjamin J. and father John Brannon all enlisted together on August 16 1862 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas. They were in the Battle of Prairie Grove and Action at Fayetteville.The regiment was then assigned to garrison duty in Fayetteville and served as a counter-guerrilla force and as escort for wagon supply trains. James applied for a pension in 1882 and his widow applied in 1902. James was a Physician & merchant in Mason Valley, Benton County, Arkansas.James was married in 1853 in Monroe County, Tennessee to Nancy Ann Philpott. Nancy was born Dec 12, 1835 in Monroe County, Tennessee and died Dec 28, 1920 in Oregon, buried Salem Pioneer Cemetery in Salem. Nancy was the d/o Barton and Catharine (Funderburk) Philpott.

James and Nancy were living in Searcy, Prairie, Arkansas in 1870. They lived briefly in Vernon County, Wisconsin near Nancy's parents. They then traveled from Wisconsin to Benton County, Arkansas in a wagon train with numerous relatives and neighbors. They settled in Mason Valley. The 1900 census shows that Nancy was the mother of 8 children with 5 living in 1900. 1. John William, born 1855 2. Benjamin, born about 1859 3. Taylor Curtis, born 1860, married Margaret "Ella" Markel d/o Samuel D. & Emily Jane Vanover (Ella was T.C.'s 2nd wife) 4. Margaret E., born 1867, married George Albert Stephenson 5. James Muncy, married Martha E. Kiser 6. Levada M., married John T. Lane/Lain/Layne 7. Floyd Philpott Brannon, born Dec 1881, died 13 Aug 1945 in Skagit, Washington. He married Ola Zimmerman.
