Solomon was born in 1846. He was the son of George Braley and Naomi Kingsley. He passed away in 1893. [1] [2]

The following story comes from the Clinton County, NY, Civil War Records 1861-1865 Facebook Page:

DIED BEFORE THE MAN FOR WHOM HE SUBSTITUTED - Solomon Gould Braley was named after his grandfather, who came from Massachusetts to settle in Warren County after the Revolution. In August 1864, Solomon was living with his parents, George Braley and Naomi Kingsley, on their farm in Chester, when he chose to enlist in the 46th Infantry in Plattsburgh as a substitute for James H. Griswold, a local doctor.

In April 1864, the original members of the 46th who did not reenlist after their terms were up, went to New York to be mustered out. The veteran regiment, made up of men who wanted to reenlist and new recruits, went to serve with the Army of the Potomac.

After the battles at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy and Cold Harbor, they moved on to Petersburg, sustaining many casualties along the way. Solomon was sent to join them as one of the replacement troops. With the 46th, he participated in the actions at the Weldon Railroad, Poplar Spring Church, Hatcher's Run, Fort Stedman, and the final assault on April 2, 1865. Soon after the fall of Petersburg, the regiment was ordered to Washington, where it was mustered out at Delaney House on July 28, 1865.

Solomon returned to Warren County and married Cora Jeffers in Luzerne in 1872. He farmed for a few years and, in the 1880s, the family moved to Schoharie County where he supported them as a salesman for agricultural products. Solomon died in Cobleskill in 1893 at 46 years of age and was buried in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery where his wife joined him in 1926. Dr. Griswold, for whom he substituted, died in 1900 when he was 73 years old and was buried in the Pottersville New Cemetery in Warren County.
