Amos is the son of John and Elizabeth Unknown Bradley, born in 1837. He served in the Union Navy during the Civil War and for his heroic actions, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Amos moved out west and drove a stagecoach. He married Mary Unknown. He died in Washington in 1894.
1837 in Dansville, Livingston, New York, USA. Although nothing seems to say where Amos was born, it would be sensible to believe he was born in Dansville, New York where his father lived and was so involved in building a town and business. [1][2][3][4][5][7][10][11]
Marriage
Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Amos married Mary Unknown. [4][5]
Note: It has been suggested that she is the daughter of Benjamin and Rose Lysbet Hipes.
Military Service
Amos enlisted in the Union Navy in Boston, MA in 1861, his rank being Landsman. This is the rank for all new members of the US Navy, at that time. Amos was among the first members of the Navy to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. His CMOH was General Order 11, dated April 3, 1863. "Served on board the USS Varuna in one of the most responsible positions, during the attacks on Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and while in action against the rebel ship Morgan 24 April 1862. Although guns were raking the decks from behind him, Bradley remained steadfast at the wheel throughout the thickest of the fight, continuing at his station and rendering service with the greatest courage until his ship, repeatedly holed and twice rammed by the rebel ship Morgan, was beached and sunk."
