Gamaliel Bradford was born on 4 November 1763 in Duxbury, Plymouth. He was the son of Gamaliel Bradford and Sarah Alden.

He served with his father in the 14th Massachusetts Regiment during the Revolutional War, who as a Colonel, was the commanding officer. He earned a commission as a lieutenant in the Continental Army by the age of 17.

He married Elizabeth Parker Hickling on 5 August 1792 in Boston, Massachusetts. They had the following children:

  1. Sarah, m. Samuel Ripley.
  2. Gamaliel, born 17 Nov., 1795, m. Sophia Rice, died 22 Oct., 1839.
  3. Elizabeth.
  4. Daniel N., died 1821.
  5. Martha T., m. James Bartlett.
  6. John B.
  7. Margaret S., m. S. Ames.
  8. George P.
  9. Hannah R., m. A. H. Fiske.[1]

In 1943, the destroyer USS Bradford (DD-545) was named in his honor.

Gamaliel passed away on 7 March 1824 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
