Biography

Martha Tennessee Eliza Boyd was born about September 1845 in Springfield, Greene, Missouri, United States, ninth child and only daughter of Marcus Boyd (~1803–1866) and Eliza Hamilton (1810–1845). Her mother died "of Fever" either the day she was born, or shortly after, on 15 September.[1]
Her father remarried while she was still an infant, and by 1850, she had two younger half-sisters.[2]
By the time she was fourteen, she had seven younger siblings. She would surely have only had the vaguest of recollections of her eldest brothers, who left for California when she was still quite young. Two more left when she was about twelve, and by 1860, only one of her elder brothers remained.[3]
Tennessee married John Gowen Rains on 23 November 1861 in Gibson County, Tennessee. Born in nearby Nashville, John was the son of Wilford Hockett Rains and Mariah Lydia Gowen.[4] They had five children together, though only two were living in 1900.[5] Their known children were:
- Maria A Rains (b. abt. 1870)[6]
- John Marcus ("Mark") Rains (1873-1900)
- Isaac A Rains (1880-1902)
- Marjorie Rains (1882-1900)
In 1880, they were living on a farm in the 7th Civil District of Davidson County. They had three children at that time.[6]
John died in the summer of 1897. His will, dated 13 June of that year, left everything to his widow "Tennie," except a few head of livestock which he gave to their daughter. He states that their three living children were Marcus, Isaac, and Margery. On 26 July 1897, Tennessee signed a letter to the judge of the probate, declining administratorship.[7]
In 1900, Tennessee was living in Civil District 7, Davidson County with her daughter Marjorie, who was 18.[5]
Tennessee died of "paralysis" on 28 January 1902 at her home near Antioch, Davidson County. Her obituary states that her only surviving child was Isaac.[8]
