Birth: George was baptised on 3 June 1732 at Crail, Fife, the register recording his father's name as James "Buman", and his mother's name as Katharin Ramsay.[1][2] His parents, James "Buman" and Katharin Ramsay, had married in 1714 at Crail.[3]
Marriage: George Bowman and Margaret Mill married in 1763: the marriage was recorded on 29 January and 1 March in 1763 at Crail, Fife. [4]
George was a shoe maker. George and Margaret had seven known children. We know from the births of the children that they were living at Crail, in Fifeshire until about 1768, then crossed the Forth to Dirleton in East Lothian, and in 1779 they were living in the neighbouring parish of North Berwick.
Two of the sons, John and William, migrated to Australia. They had gone "to London at an early age and were apprenticed to an uncle, Mr Mills(sic), their mother's brother, who is said to have maintained a large cabinet-making establishment in Bond Street and they were taught their trade under his guidance. They were also placed under the protection of their slightly older first cousin Thomas Bowman of New Bond Street and lived with him for several years".[5]
