Biography

Edmund Bowling was born in Maryland.
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Edmund Bowling was a Maryland colonist.

He reported his birth date (Aug 1744) and birth place (St Mary's Maryland) in his pension application. [1]

Also mentioned in his Father's Will as Edmund.[2]

Changed his name to Edward by the time he migrated to Amherst, Virginia[1] with his step-father, John Cartwight.[citation needed]

1776 Project
Edmund Bowling served with Virginia Line during the American Revolution.

Served in the American Revolution - "That he served eighteen months during the revolutionary war in three separate tours of six months each as a Volunteer in Captain Richard Ballingers Company of infantry. That he was at the battle of Gilford [sic: Guilford Courthouse NC, 15 Mar 1781], it being the only engagement he was in during his campaign." [3] as Corporal under Major Lewis' Command.[1]

He died after Nov 1832, probably in Georgia, from where and when he applied for a Revolutionary War pension.[1]

Research Notes

He self-reported his own birth as Aug 1844. Therefore, he could not be the [N] Bowling who married Elizabeth Bragg in Apr 1844!

update - I've changed the project box to a sticker and removed Virginia Project as co-manager.

update2 - I heard back from Maggie, who watches over the Bollings, and so have added US Southern Colonies Project as a manager. (and then removed it, as I had misunderstood her reply)

Hi! This profile is co-managed by the Virginia Project and I'm not sure why. The project box is for the 1776 Project, but it does not look like a profile that project would normally manage. If you think it should, please reply to that effect here & ask the 1776 Project about adopting it. Otherwise, if no objections, I intend to change the 1776 template to the 1776 Sticker and remove Virginia Project as a manager.

For other stickers that may be appropriate, see Template: Virginia Sticker, Template: Virginia Sticker, and Space:US_Southern_Colonies_Stickers (specifically, Space:US_Southern_Colonies_Stickers#Maryland).

Cheers, Liz
