Governor of Oregon. "Jay Bowerman was born in Hesper, Iowa, and moved to Oregon as a young man. He completed his education at Willamette University, receiving a law degree. Upon admittance to the Bar he engaged in the practice of law. With the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, Bowerman enlisted with the Army, and was mustered out at the war’s end. He returned to Condon, Oregon and resumed his law practice. He was also engaged in farming and a real estate business. In 1904 he was elected to the first of two terms in the State Senate, and served as the Senate President from 1909 until 1911. When Governor Frank Benson’s poor health required him to step down, Bowerman assumed the Governorship, and served from June 17, 1910 until January 11, 1911. As Governor, Bowerman established a Board of Control which acted as a central purchasing agent for all the state institutions. He also devised banking standards and practices to protect depositor’s money. He advocated for the development of roads throughout the state. He also modernized state land management practices. He was unsuccessful in his attempt for reelection. Following his term as Governor, he returned to the State Senate, where he was again elected the President. Soon thereafter he retired from public life and returned to his legal practice and business interests. He died on October 25, 1957." Bio by: Eddie [Find A Grave memorial for Jay Bowerman]
