Biography

Flag of Cornwall (St Piran's Cross, pre-1838)
Philip Bowden was born in Cornwall, England.

Philip was born in 1846 to parents John Bowden and Elizabeth Cole. His birth was registered in the Liskeard district of Cornwall. [1]

In the 1851 census, Philip's family are recorded as living at Duloe, Cornwall. The family consisted of father John age 60, older siblings Elizabeth (age 25) and Benjamin (age 14) as well as Philip (age 5). [2]

He was baptised on the 21 Oct 1852 in the parish of Duloe. The register names his parents as John (a labourer) and Elizabeth of Tredinnick, Cornwall and gives Philip's age as 6 and a half. [3]

By 1861, Philip was living in Liskeard, Cornwall and was apprenticed to a shoemaker. [4]

In the last quarter of 1870, Philip married Mary Ann Tink. Their marriage was registered in the Liskeard district. [5]

By the 1871 census Philip and Mary Ann had settled at Linkinhorne, Cornwall. Philip was described as "cordwainer" an old-fashioned term for a shoemaker. [6]

In 1881, Philip and Mary Ann, along with their four children, were living in Stoke Damerel, Devon. Phlip was still working as a shoemaker. [7]

1891 saw the family of Philip the shoemaker back in Cornwall at St Dominick. [8]

In the 1901 census. Philip, Mary Ann and two of their children, William and Samuel are recorded as still living in the parish of St Dominick. Philip is still plying his trade as a shoemaker. The enumerator has recorded the family name as "Bowton" making this record a little tricky to find! [9]

In 1911, Philip and Mary Ann were no longer in their own home, but were visiting the St Dominick household of William Striplin. [10]

His death was registered in the third quarter of 1911 in the Liskeard District. [11] Philip was buried in St Dominick on 6 Sep 1911 aged 65. His residence at the time of his death was listed as Halton Quay, St Dominick. [12]

Research Note

The ages presented in the 1851 census for the family members are interesting and it is possible that Philip was actually the grandson of John and the son of his daughter Elizabeth.
