At the start of World War II, as soon as the capitulation of France was announced by Marshal Pétain on June 17, 1940, Daniel Cordier refused defeat. He left France by boat with a group of 17 young men determined to fight, landing in England in June 1940. He was parachuted in Montlucon in June 1942 and became Jean Moulin's secretary in Lyon. He was made a Companion of the Liberation following a decree issued on November 20, 1944.

After the war he became a gallery owner and art dealer. At the end of the 1970s he began a new career as a historian, writing several books on the Resistance and in particular Jean Moulin (Jean Moulin: L'inconnu du Panthéon, 1993; Jean Moulin: La République des Catacombes, 1999). He is also an activist for the rights of homosexuals.

Daniel Cordier died on November 20, 2020 in Cannes. At the time of his death, at the age of 100, he was one of the last two surviving Companions of the Liberation. He was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery after a national tribute ceremony in the courtyard of the Invalides in Paris.
