Russell was born on May 15, 1919 at Consort, Alberta. He was a son of George Cartwright, a trucker and farmer, and Florence Mary (Nelder) Boulton. He was educated in Alberta and Manitoba, completing high school in Swan River, Manitoba in 1936. Throughout his childhood, he participated in many sports. He took an associates course in banking from 1937-1939.[1]
He was a bank teller for the Royal Bank of Canada in Red Deer when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on Oct 8, 1941.[1] He had previous experience in the militia from 1939-1941 but no prior flying experience.
In 1943, he was attached to the 22nd Overseas Training Unit, a unit formed in April 1941 at RAF Wellesbourne Mountford to train night bomber crews on Vickers Wellington bomber aircraft.[2] On Feb 13 of that year, he was piloting a Wellington III with 8 other military personnel onboard when it was lost in a crash. All were interred at Stratford-Upon-Avon Cemetery, Warwickshire, United Kingdom.[3][1]Full Crew List of RAF HF759:
